Galileo at the Wilma: Norm Roessler Interviews Mimi Lien

Welcome to Guerilla Theater. In this segment, we talk to Mimi Lien and Walter Bilderback and their involvement with the Wilma Theater production of Brecht’s Life of Galileo. The Wilma Theater is located in Philadelphia, PA and is one of the leading regional theaters in the city. The production used a translation by David Edgar, was directed by Blanka Zizka, and ran from April 11 to May 19, 2007. I spoke first with the Scenic Designer Mimi Lien. We met on a Sunday afternoon, a week before the premiere, in the foyer of the Wilma Theater. Mimi Lien holds an MFA in Design from NYU and a BA in Architecture from Yale University. She lives and works in New York City and has designed sets for theatre, film, dance, and opera. Although most of her work is in NYC, she has worked in Philadelphia, most notably with the Pig Iron Theatre and the Wilma Theater. The Life of Galileo is her second collaboration with the Wilma Theater. In 2005, she designed the set for Itamar Moses’ Outrage for which she received a Barrymore Award, Philadelphia’s equivalent of the Tony Awards. I reviewed Outrage for the IBS and one can read the review in the article on this website, The Incredible Lightness of Brecht on the American Stage.”
